What Junk Removal Companies Can't Legally Haul
A licensed hauler can take almost anything from a house, garage, or job site. The short list of exceptions is driven by state and transfer-station rules, not preference.
The restricted list
Hazardous liquids: gasoline, motor oil, solvents, pool chemicals, and wet paint. Dried-out latex paint is usually fine.
Asbestos-containing material, which requires a licensed abatement contractor.
Medical and biohazard waste, including sharps.
Propane tanks and other pressurized cylinders, plus ammunition and explosives.
Items with special handling
Tires, refrigerant appliances, TVs, and electronics can be taken, but they carry a per-item recycling fee at the facility.
Freon appliances need certified evacuation before scrapping, which is why a fridge costs more than a dresser of the same size.
Where the rest goes
Cuyahoga, Medina, and Lorain counties all run household hazardous waste drop-off days. Paint hardener from a hardware store solves most paint cans for a few dollars.
